My name is Jay Evans, I am the creator of Rap and Literature. The goal of Rap and Literature is to raise awareness regarding the importance of reading and acquiring knowledge on any given subject.

In 2013 I opened my first business a men’s clothing store, Blue Pyramid in my hometown of Starkville, MS. We were having some shaky moments with the business and I gravitated to listening to a lot of Nipsey. I gravitated to Nipsey because he had a store and went through similar struggles with entrepreneurship. I got familiar with books he read that helped him figure out things on the business side. He had his store, lost it, and then came back to buy his block.

During this time, Nipsey released his Crenshaw mixtape. I was immediately interested in the logic behind the marketing of the $100 mixtape. I found several interviews where he mentioned the book Contagious by Jonah Berger being the inspiration. I watched several of the interviews and immediately bought the book. I read the book in 2 days. I began wondering what else Nipsey read.

After reading Contagious I watched other Nipsey interviews where he discussed several books that had profound impacts on him. While reading Three Magic Words by Uell Anderson, a Nipsey recommendation, one day on my mom’s couch the idea came to me for a branded website to spread knowledge of what rappers were reading.

I began working on the idea and it brought me to what you see now. All money from purchases or donations will be used for book giveaways and the building of book boxes in local communities.

Thanks for visiting and supporting the site.
